12:45 – 14:00 Round table ‘Spain’s priorities in the EU: Presidency of the Council and beyond’

Spain will take over the presidency of the EU Council on 1 July, a rotating responsibility it has already held in 1989, 1995, 2002 and 2010. It comes at a key moment due to the various consequences of the war in Ukraine, and because this will be the last full six months of work before the end of the current European institutional cycle.

Among the priorities for the six months are the promotion of open strategic autonomy and the EU’s relationship with Latin America and the Caribbean. Beyond this presidency of the Council, Spain’s priorities in relation to the European project include, on the domestic front, promoting the green and digital transitions, advancing towards full Economic and Monetary Union and the Capital Markets Union, and promoting social policies; while on the external front, Spain aspires to strengthen the EU’s role as a global actor.
