ABOUT GABRIELA

Gabriela Cañas is a journalist and writer. Between 2020 and 2023 she was President of Agencia EFE and became the first woman to hold this position. She has spent most of her career at El País, where she has been Head of the Madrid section, Head of Society, Editorialist, member of the Editorial Board and Correspondent in Brussels. She has also been Deputy Director of the UAM-El País School of Journalism, where she lectured on the master’s degree in journalism.

In 2006 she was appointed by the Council of Ministers as Director General of International Information, a position she held for the following two years. In her early career in journalism, she worked at El Globo magazine, Radiocadena Española and Diario de Cádiz.

In 2002, she was awarded the “Women in the European Union” prize by the European Commission, and in 2011 she received the Meridiana Prize in the category of Initiative in the Media or Advertising.

She holds a Degree in Information Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid.
