The United States of America is not just one president or one administration, but their decisions certainly have an impact at home and abroad. Challenging the role of institutions or questioning the checks and balances are stressing US democracy. Executive orders that eliminate policies of diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) have an impact on freedoms (of expression and opinion, academic, or independent research in the case of think tanks).
According to Joseph Nye’s definition, a country’s soft power is based on “values, institutions, culture, ideas and the legitimacy of its actions”. This roundtable will explore recent political, social and cultural dynamics in the US and their impact on its soft power.
