José M. de Areilza is Secretary General (Aspen Institute España) and Professor of Law and Jean Monnet Chair at ESADE Law School. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Elcano Royal Institute. He holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Harvard University, a Master of Arts in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (S.J.D.) from Harvard University. Between 1991 and 1994 he was a Fulbright scholar and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1991 (July). Between 1996 and 2000 he served as advisor to the Spanish Prime Minister on European and North American affairs. In 2007 he was elected Member of the Board of Governors of the Madrid Bar Association. He has been Dean of IE Law School. He is a member of the Board of Directors of ABC newspaper, where he writes a weekly column on international affairs. He is a Trustee of Fundación Transición Española and Fundación Prodis, and a Member of the ECFR (European Council on Foreign Relations) council.
