Carlos Alonso Zaldívar (Bilbao, 1946) is Senior Research Fellow and member of the Scientific Council at the Elcano Royal Institute. He was Ambassador of Spain to the Federative Republic of Brazil in (2009 – 2012), Ambassador of Spain to the Republic of Cuba in (2004- 2008), Cultural Counsellor of the Spanish Embassy at Rome (2001-2004), Deputy Head of Mission to Israel (1997-2001), Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (1994-1997), Director of Policy Planning of the Prime Minister’s Felipe Gonzalez (1990-1994), Counsellor for policy and military affairs at the Spanish Embassy in Washington D.C. (1988-90), and Executive Adviser to the Foreign Affairs Minister (1985-1988 with Mr. Fernando Morán and Mr. Francisco Fernández Ordóñez).
He is a career diplomat, MA in Aeronautical Engineering (Polytechnic University of Madrid) and holds a degree in Economy and Business Administration (Polytechnic University of Madrid). Before becoming a diplomat he taught Algebra to students of the Aeronautical Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (1969-71), worked at the department of technical and economic research of the private company Iberplan S.A., Madrid (1972-74), and was visiting researcher at the Peace Research Institute (PRIO) in Oslo (1983).
He is also member of the ECFR council, the editorial board of Política Exterior magazine and the Advisory Council of the Anuario Internacional CIDOB.
