The 2010 edition shows that 78% of Europeans approve of U.S. President Barack Obama’s foreign policies and 55% find it desirable that the U.S exert strong global leadership. Only 49% approve of how Obama has dealt with Afghanistan and Iran.

Most data cover the period 1998-2008 for the European Union and its Member States, while some indicators are provided for other countries, such as candidate countries to the European Union, members of EFTA, Japan or the U.S. This year’s edition spotlight chapter covers national accounts statistics – with a particular focus on the economic downturn observed during 2008-2009.

The report released by the World Economic Forum highlights that Switzerland tops the overall ranking, while the U.S ranking falls two places to fourth position, overtaken by Sweden (2nd) and Singapore (3rd). The Spain ranking drops nine places to 42nd position versus 33rd in the previous edition of the GCR.

The UN Secretary General transmitted to the General Assembly the advisory opinion given by the International Court of Justice on 22 July 2010 in the case entitled Accordance with international law of the unilateral declaration of independence in respect of Kosovo (A/64/881).
