The 2010 edition of the Trade and Development Report, subtitled “Employment, globalization and development”, focuses on the need to make employment creation a priority in economic policy, and also makes recommendations for a reorientation of macroeconomic policies and institution building aimed at strengthening domestic demand

The 2010 edition shows that 78% of Europeans approve of U.S. President Barack Obama’s foreign policies and 55% find it desirable that the U.S exert strong global leadership. Only 49% approve of how Obama has dealt with Afghanistan and Iran.

The report of the high-level European Policy Summit, co-organised by Friends of Europe, Telefónica and the Elcano Royal Institute in June 2010, highlights that the EU needs strengthen its links with ‘a region that has come through the financial crisis in good shape and that is going to be one of the main engines of growth in years to come’.

The EUROSTAT Yearbook 2010 presents a comprehensive selection of statistical data on Europe. Most data cover the period 1998-2008 for the European Union and its Member States, while some indicators are provided for other countries, such as candidate countries to the European Union, members of EFTA, Japan or the U.S. This year’s edition spotlight chapter covers national accounts statistics – with a particular focus on the economic downturn observed during 2008-2009.

The report released by the World Economic Forum highlights that Switzerland tops the overall ranking, while the U.S ranking falls two places to fourth position, overtaken by Sweden (2nd) and Singapore (3rd). The Spain ranking drops nine places to 42nd position versus 33rd in the previous edition of the GCR.

The Presidency Conclusions of the Brussels European Council -held on 16 September- includes statements on: the European Union’s external policy in order to enhance its effectiveness as a global actor, the forthcoming meetings such as summits with China and South Korea and the biennial ASEM, the Task Force on Economic Governance and a pledge to support Pakistan to overcome the severe humanitarian crisis caused by the summer floods.

The UN Secretary General transmitted to the General Assembly the advisory opinion given by the International Court of Justice on 22 July 2010 in the case entitled Accordance with international law of the unilateral declaration of independence in respect of Kosovo (A/64/881). Also, the General Assembly acknowledged the advisory opinion by a consensus resolution on 9 September 2010.

According to the staff statement of the Spain Article IV Executive Board Consultation -concluded on 14 July 2010- ‘after 15 years of strong growth led by a housing boom, the Spanish economy has entered a sharp downturn in the wake of the global financial crisis since mid-2007’.

The 41st edition of the annual statistical data of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) presents a special chapter on the Rise of Asia’s Middle Class. It looks at the growth and impacts of the region’s rapidly expanding middle class, and resulting economic and policy implications.

Following the Sudanese national elections in April 2010, the improved relations between this country and Chad after the signing of an agreement to normalise their bilateral relations and the concern over the negative affect of the ongoing violence in Darfur, the UN Security Council –at its 6366th meeting on 30 July 2010- decided to extend the mandate of UNAMID for a further year to 31 July 2011.
