This year’s edition of the Economic Report on Africa (‘Developing African Agriculture through Regional Value Chain’) –jointly published by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Union Commission- highlights the recent economic trends and prospects in Africa.

The ‘UNAIDS action framework: universal access for men who have sex with men and transgender people’ is a plan launched by the joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and UN Development Programme (UNDP). It encourages new and better approaches to HIV, specifically focusing on men who have sex with men and on transgender populations.

The level of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the region, excluding the financial centres, reached US$ 128.301 billion, surpassing by 13% the record level observed in 2007 compared with the FDI flows worldwide that shrank by 15% in the same period, according to the 2008 edition of the Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The European Commission issued on 4 May its spring economic forecast. The EU economy is in the midst of its deepest and most widespread recession of the post-war era, but it is set to stabilise in 2010 as the ambitious measures taken by governments and central banks in these exceptional circumstances are expected to put a floor under the fall in economic activity this year and enable a recovery next year.

According to the World Economic Outlook (WEO) – released in April 2009-, ‘while the rate contraction should moderate from the second quarter onward, world output is projected to decline by 1.3 percent in 2009 as a whole and to recover only gradually in 2010, growing by 1.9 percent’.

The report shows that in 2009 immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean will remit US$64 billion, down from US$69 billion in 2008.
