The fourth Global Environment Outlook: environment for development (GEO-4) warns about the major threats to the planet such as climate change, the rate of extinction of species and the challenge of feeding a growing population. The UNEP’s publication is a comprehensive and authoritative UN report on environment, prepared by about 390 experts. It identifies priorities for action and describes the changes since 1987, 20 years after the WCED produced its seminal report (Our Common Future).

The Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) measures policies to integrate migrants in 25 EU Member States and 3 non-EU countries (Canada, Norway and Switzerland). It uses over 100 policy indicators and covers 6 policy areas. The MIPEX is produced by a consortium of 25 organisations, led by the British Council and Migration Policy Group (MPG).

The 2008 edition of the World Development Report (WDR) –published by the World Bank (WB) on 19 October- calls for an ‘agriculture for development’ agenda in developing countries. The report states that promoting agriculture is imperative for meeting the Millennium Development Goal of halving poverty and hunger by 2015.

The WIR07 analyses the latest trends in foreign direct investment (FDI) and puts a special focus in 2007 on the role of transnational corporations (TNCs) in the extraction of oil, gas, and metal minerals.  The UNCTAD’s World Investment Report series focuses on trends in foreign direct investment (FDI) worldwide and at the regional and country levels, as well as emerging measures to improve FDI´s contribution to development.

The recent World Economic Outlook (WEO) –presented on October 2007- stresses that the forecast for global economy growth has little been affected by the latest turbulence in financial markets. The baseline projection for 2008 global growth has been reduced by almost a half percentage point relative to the July 2007 WEO Update.

The global financial stability has endured an important test, according to the September 2007 Global Financial Stability Report (GFSR). Since the April edition, credit and market risks have risen and markets have become more volatile.The potential consequences of this episode should not be underestimated and the adjustment process is likely to be protracted.

The annual Commitment to Development (CDI) rates 21 rich countries on their dedication to policies that benefit poorer nations. Each rich country gets scores in seven policy areas (aid, trade, investment, migration environment, security and technology), which are averaged for an overall score. This year edition –published on 15 October- is focused on environment.

The 2007 edition of the Trade and Development Report, subtitled “Regional cooperation for development”, recommends that developing countries should strengthen regional cooperation with other developing countries, but proceed carefully with regard to North-South bilateral or regional preferential trade agreements.

The cost of conflict on African development was approximately US$300 billion between 1990 and 2005, according to this study which calculate for the first time the overall effects of conflict on GDP. The new research by Oxfam International, IANSA and Saferworld also stresses that this cost is equal to the amount of money received in international aid during the same period.

This report aims to measure public opinion on culture and values within Europe, in order to ascertain both their opinions and behaviour in this area. It examines how Europeans conceive of the idea of culture, their interest in culture both in Europe and beyond, and issues of cultural exchange. Published on 27 September, the survey was carried out in the 27 Member states on February-March 2007.

The recent issue of this International Poverty Centre (IPC) publication presents 12 articles summarising some of the most important recent research results and commentaries on the effectiveness of international development cooperation against the background of high-level promises of rapidly increasing aid, including policy conclusions and recommendations for enhancing the impact of aid on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

This report reviews the Bush Administration proposal of deploying a a ground based mid-course defence (GMD) element of the larger Ballistic Missile Defence System (BMDS) in Europe to defend against an Iranian missile threat. The GMD plan has encountered resistance in some European countries and also affected the U.S – Russia relations.

This upward revision of the Asian Development Outlook 2007 reflects the exceptional performance in both the People's Republic of China (PRC) and India, which are again propelling growth in the region. It also cautions that growth in 2008 is seen slowing gently to 8.2%, and stresses that developing Asia's growth prospects will continue to depend on how well it copes with its own domestic challenges.

The aim of the fifth edition survey is to give a full comparative picture of debates on European issues –such as the future of Europe at the end of the German presidency or the climate change and the EU’s energy policy- in the member states of the EU and two candidates countries (Croatia and Turkey). This project is coordinated by Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP) and Institutes from all 27 EU member states –including the Elcano Royal Institute- as well as Croatia and Turkey.

According to the 2007 Corruption Perceptions Index -released on 26 September by Transparency International- a strong correlation between corruption and poverty continues to be evident. Somalia and Myanmar share the lowest score of 1.4, while Denmark has edged up to share the top score of 9.4 with perennial high-flyers Finland and New Zealand. The 2007 CPI looks at perceptions of public sector corruption in 180 countries and territories and is a composite index that draws on 14 expert opinion surveys, which scores countries on a scale from 0 to 10.

This publication of the Statistical Office of the European Communities contains information on EU-27, EU-25, EU Member States and Candidate Countries, as well as Iceland and Norway, in the form of time series. This data is focused on the principal components of the energy balance and the evolution of the main energy indicators since 2000, and the trends in energy supply and consumption, by fuel.
