The fourth Global Environment Outlook: environment for development (GEO-4) warns about the major threats to the planet such as climate change, the rate of extinction of species and the challenge of feeding a growing population. The UNEP’s publication is a comprehensive and authoritative UN report on environment, prepared by about 390 experts. It identifies priorities for action and describes the changes since 1987, 20 years after the WCED produced its seminal report (Our Common Future).

The Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) measures policies to integrate migrants in 25 EU Member States and 3 non-EU countries (Canada, Norway and Switzerland). It uses over 100 policy indicators and covers 6 policy areas. The MIPEX is produced by a consortium of 25 organisations, led by the British Council and Migration Policy Group (MPG).

The 2008 edition of the World Development Report (WDR) –published by the World Bank (WB) on 19 October- calls for an ‘agriculture for development’ agenda in developing countries. The report states that promoting agriculture is imperative for meeting the Millennium Development Goal of halving poverty and hunger by 2015.

The recent World
Economic Outlook (WEO) –presented on October 2007- stresses that the forecast
for global economy growth has little been affected by the latest turbulence in
financial markets. The baseline projection for 2008 global growth has been
reduced by almost a half percentage point relative to the July 2007 WEO Update.

and Development Report, subtitled “Regional cooperation for development”,
recommends that developing countries should strengthen regional cooperation

The cost of conflict on
African development was approximately US$300 billion between 1990 and 2005,
according to this study which calculate for the first time the overall effects
of conflict on GDP. The new research by Oxfam
International, IANSA and Saferworld also stresses that this cost
is equal to the amount of money received in international aid during the same
period.

Administration proposal of deploying a a ground based mid-course defence (GMD) element of the larger Ballistic Missile Defence System (BMDS)
in Europe to defend against an Iranian missile threat. The GMD plan has
encountered resistance in some European countries and also affected the U.S –

This upward revision of the Asian Development Outlook 2007 reflects
the exceptional performance in both the People's Republic of China (PRC) and
India, which are again propelling growth in the region. It also cautions that
growth in 2008 is seen slowing gently to 8.2%, and stresses that developing

own domestic challenges.

According to the 2007 Corruption Perceptions Index -released
on 26 September by Transparency
International- a strong correlation between corruption and poverty
continues to be evident. Somalia and Myanmar share the lowest score of 1.4,
while Denmark has edged up to share the top score of 9.4 with perennial
high-flyers Finland and New Zealand. The 2007 CPI looks at perceptions
of public sector corruption in 180 countries and territories and is a composite
index that draws on 14 expert opinion surveys, which scores countries on a
scale from 0 to 10.
