The U.S Department of Defense’s annual report is focused on the current and future military strategy of China. It stresses that Beijing’s military transformation has increased in recent years, fuelled by continued high rates of investment in its domestic defence, science and technologies industries, acquisition of advanced foreign weapons, and far reaching reforms of the armed forces.

Africa Development Indicators 2006 provides the most detailed collection of data on Africa available in one volume. It contains about 450 macroeconomic, sectoral, and social indicators, covering 53 African countries.

This ICG's report -published on 11 June 2007- is focused on the Western Sahara conflict as both one of the world’s oldest and one of its most neglected. But the conflict has human, political and economic costs and real victims: for the countries directly concerned, the region and the wider international community. This is important to acknowledge if a new conflict-resolution dynamic is to be created.

In March 2005, more than 100 countries made a firm commitment in the Paris Declaration to measure their success, or failure, in making aid more effective. This report provides a snapshot of the state of affairs in 2005. For the first time, it assesses the effectiveness of aid, not only globally, but also for a range of donors. Using 12 social, economic, political and military indicators, it ranks 148 states in order of their vulnerability to violent internal conflict and societal dysfunction.

This year’s edition underlines the growing importance of inflows of highly qualified workers, temporary workers and students. It highlights the increased immigration from India, China, Eastern Europe and Africa, and confirms the tendency towards the feminisation of this movement.

This UNODC's report provides the most comprehensive statistical view of today's illicit drug situation. The 2007 edition reports signs of long-term containment of the global problem. However, the overall trend masks contrasting regional situations, which the report examines in detail.
