The Elcano Expert Comments are brief 800- to 1,000-word pieces produced by the Elcano Royal Institute's analysts as an immediate response to international events relevant to Spain.
Analysis of the Real Instituto Elcano (ARI)
The analyses are short pieces -of around 3,000 words- on aspects of current international affairs considered to be of relevance to Spain, its foreign policy or its security. In broad terms ARIs are intended to have a predictive bearing on events.
Working Papers (WP)
The Elcano Royal Institute's Working Papers are longer documents of an academic nature -usually between 12,000 and 15,000 words long, with footnotes and bibliographies- on current international affairs of relevance to Spain or on different aspects of Spain's foreign policy and security.
Barometer of the RIE (BRIE)
The BRIE is a thrice-yearly survey conducted in February, June and November that focuses on the opinions, judgements and attitudes of Spaniards on all aspects of international affairs and Spanish foreign policy (defence, the image of Spain and of other countries, Spain's position in the European Union and public perceptions of dangers and threats). It is structured in two basic modules: a fixed set of questions that provide a time-series on a number of essential parameters and a second set of questions, which vary from one survey to the next, relating to current events.
Written by William Chislett, is a special section on the current affairs in Spain included in the monthly bilingual Boletín/Newsletter.
With a broader public in mind, the Institute publishes books on different aspects of current international affairs, either alone or jointly with other institutions or commercial publishers.
The Elcano Reports are a series of documents that the Institute began to publish at the end of 2004. Their aim is to promote debate on important topics in the field of international affairs that are of special relevance to Spain. The reports are generally the result of a multidisciplinary and politically diverse working group focused on a topic of particular importance and aim to present practical policy recommendations.
The "Estudios Elcano" are previously unpublished monographs in line with the most demanding international academic standards in terms of form and content. To guarantee that they meet the required level of excellence, they are subject to prior blind review by two leading specialists unrelated to the Elcano Royal Institute's governing bodies, management or research teams, who assess their scientific rigour, methodology, originality and interest.
Regional yearbooks on strategic issues of particular interest to Spain's action abroad are published on a regular basis.
