From the point of view of political economy, a crucial point is whether
the wave of popular revolts that overthrew the incumbent regimes will
consolidate into economically-viable liberal democracies, and in what
economic direction Algeria and Morocco will move, since to date they
have been spared regime changes with a high budgetary cost.

This paper explores the role Spain can and should play in the
institutions engaged in global governance in the current context of
financial crisis and reconfiguration of international power centres.
After briefly analysing Spain’s relative position in the world
–on the basis of economic and other criteria– the study
suggests the path it should follow to boost its influence in the
world. The paper points out Spain’s comparative advantages, the
areas where it could contribute most, and the shortcomings that make
it difficult to translate Spain’s economic weight into greater
political influence at the global level.

A French proposal to create a Mediterranean Union has drawn much attention on the Euro-Mediterranean political scene. So far the proposal is somewhere between vague and indeterminate. It is important for Spain to join this process so as to guide it from the inside with coherent ideas.

This paper discusses the general nature of current demographic trends. The purpose is to offer a more nuanced view of part of the world''''s population development. In particular, the author shows that the demographic transition, while similar in developed and developing countries, gives rise to an emerging demographic clevage between developed and developing countries. The focus of this paper is on demographic changes in the Mediterranean region. Rickard Sandell contrasts demographic developments on both the southern and northern shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
