The 2011 edition of the Least Developed Countries Report –subtitled The Potential Role of South-South Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Development- argues that the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) need to go beyond business as usual in order to promote inclusive and sustainable development and it examines how South–South cooperation could support such a transformational agenda.

The 2011 Report also includes Human Development Index (HDI) and updated editions of the complementary indices introduced in the 2010 Report (the Inequality-Adjusted HDI, the Gender Inequality Index, and the Multidimensional Poverty Index).

This year’s edition of the State of the Food Insecurity in the World –subtitled ‘How does international price volatility affect domestic economies and food security?’- highlights the differential impacts that the world food crisis of 2006-08 had on different countries, with the small and import-dependent countries being most affected and specially vulnerable to poverty and food insecurity. It was produced by the three Rome-based agencies the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

This year’s edition of the Progress on World’s Women: In pursuit of Justice Report –published by UN Women, the United Nations organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women- is focused on women’s access to justice. The report recognises the progress worldwide but calls on governments to take action to end the injustices that keep women poorer and less powerful than men.

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs presents the yearly assessment of global progress towards the MDG’s. According to the report ‘significant strides have been made towards the Millennium Development Goals, yet reaching all the goals by the 2015 deadline remains challenging, as the world’s poorest are being left behind’.

It is a free, online, interactive tool of the World Bank, which maps and graphs more than 175 indicators from its development database. It also covered critical issues such as poverty, food production, population growth, climate change, international trade and foreign direct investment.

Released in March 2011, the SOFA 2010-2011 highlights the significant contributions of women to the rural economy in all developing country regions. According to this, ‘increasing women’s access to land, livestock, education, financial services, extension, technology and rural employment would boost their productivity and generate gains in terms of agricultural production, food security, economic growth and social welfare’. The Inter-American Development Bank’s Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) has issued its latest report on remittances to Latin America and the Caribbean. According to these, remittances to the region ‘are likely to rise this year after stabilizing during 2010, although a weaker dollar and higher inflation are reducing their purchasing power in many countries’.

The 2010 edition of the Statistical Yearbook for Latin America and the Caribbean is similar in structure to the 2009 edition and has no significant changes in terms of content or design. Published on 16 January, the yearbook is one of the main sources of statistical information in the region and covers demographic, social and economic issues. It also provides data on natural resources and the environment.

The 2010 edition of the 'Least-Developed Countries Report 2010' –subtitled Towards a New International Development Architecture for LDCs- calls for the creation of a new international development architecture that would be based on five pillars: finance, trade, commodities, technology and climate change.

The 20th anniversary edition of the HDR examines decades of Human Development data trends, refines the original Human Development Index with new databases and methodologies, and introduces new measures adjusting the index to reflect gender disparities and other internal national inequalities. It also features the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), which was developed by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) with UNDP support.

The livestock sector requires appropriate institutions, research, development interventions and governance that reflect the diversity within the sector and the multiple demands placed upon it.

Published on 23 June 2010, the report presents the yearly assessment of global progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. The world continues to make advances towards the MDGs, despite the global economic downturn, but the rate of improvement remains too slow and countries must step up their efforts if the MDGs are to be achieved by their target date of 2015.

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) published its report, Progress of the World’s Women 2008/2009: Who Answers to Women? Gender and Accountability, in September 2008. The document highlights the need for accountability to women and it also stresses that ‘governments and multilateral organisations must do a better job of answering to women for commitments made’.

Conducted by the African Development Bank, the study highlights the social, economic and financial importance of migrant remittances in recipient countries, which represent on average between 9 and 24% of GDP, i.e. between 80 and 750% of the official development assistance (ODA) received by such countries. It aims to take stock of the overall financial flows from the African Diaspora.

The Handbook -published by the Committee for Development Policy in December 20008- aims to promote a better understanding of the LDC (Least Developed Country) category and the benefits derived from membership therein. It contains “a comprehensive explanation of the criteria, procedures and methodology used in establishing which countries are eligible for inclusion in, or recommended for graduation from, the LDC category”.

The 2007/08 China National Human Development Report -published in November 2008- focuses on the delivery of four essential basic public services (primary and junior secondary education, basic health care, social insurance and employment services) and analyses the national goal of “equalization” of access to them closely linked to the equity goal that was presented in the 2005 report.

The report states that promoting agriculture is imperative for meeting the Millennium Development Goal of halving poverty and hunger by 2015.

The annual Commitment to Development (CDI) rates 21 rich countries on their dedication to policies that benefit poorer nations. Each rich country gets scores in seven policy areas (aid, trade, investment, migration environment, security and technology), which are averaged for an overall score. According to the 2007 Corruption Perceptions Index -released on 26 September by Transparency International- a strong correlation between corruption and poverty continues to be evident. Somalia and Myanmar share the lowest score of 1.4, while Denmark has edged up to share the top score of 9.4 with perennial high-flyers Finland and New Zealand. The 2007 CPI looks at perceptions of public sector corruption in 180 countries and territories and is a composite index that draws on 14 expert opinion surveys, which scores countries on a scale from 0 to 10.

The AEO reviews the recent economic situation, the likely short-term evolution, and the social and political context of selected African economies.

In March 2005, more than 100 countries made a firm commitment in the Paris Declaration to measure their success, or failure, in making aid more effective. This report provides a snapshot of the state of affairs in 2005. For the first time, it assesses the effectiveness of aid, not only globally, but also for a range of donors. This paper provides some background and a description of the financing commitments made at the Gleneagles G8 Summit in 2005. It then looks at the extent to which G8 members are meeting their commitments to increase aid and provide debt relief. The paper also includes a brief assessment of the aid activities of non-G8 countries, and concludes with a look ahead to the G8 Summit in Germany in June 2007.

Today, women constitute almost half of all international migrants worldwide -95 million or 49.6 per cent. This year edition of the State of World Population Report –published by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA)- is dedicated to migrant women and their contribution to the economy and social well-being of populations living in both source and receiving countries
